The basics

What is air dry clay?

Air dry clay is a water-based modelling material that hardens on its own when left out at room temperature — no oven, no kiln, no firing schedule. You open the pack, knead it soft, sculpt what you want, and let physics do the rest. Within 24 to 72 hours the piece is permanently solid and ready to paint.

JOVI has been making art materials in Barcelona, Spain since 1939, and their air dry clay is the reference product used in Spanish and European primary classrooms. It is fine-grained, low-odour, low-shrinkage and certified to the EN71 toy-safety standard with the CE mark, which is why teachers trust it with children as young as three.

The difference from polymer clay is that polymer clay needs to be baked in an oven to set. The difference from plastilina (also called plasticine) is that plastilina never hardens — it stays soft and reusable. JOVI Air Dry Clay sits in the middle: workable and forgiving while you sculpt, then permanent once dry.

In Bahasa Malaysia: tanah liat kering udara — clay that dries in air, the same product used across primary-school PSV (Pendidikan Seni Visual) lessons under the KSSR syllabus.

Which clay should I buy?

Air dry clay vs plastilina vs polymer clay

Three of the most common modelling materials, side by side. JOVI makes the first two — we recommend air dry clay for finished pieces and plastilina for reusable practice.

How to use

Six steps from pack to finished piece

A simple workflow that works for first-timers, primary classrooms and craft makers alike. No oven, no kiln, no special equipment.

  1. 1

    Open & Knead

Open the pack and knead a fist-sized lump for 30–60 seconds until the air dry clay is soft, even and slightly warm. Work on a non-stick surface — silicone mat, baking paper or a smooth tile.

  2. 2

    Sculpt or Mould

Build by hand, roll into slabs and cut shapes, or press into silicone moulds. For larger forms, bulk out the inside with foil or rolled paper so the wall thickness stays even.

  3. 3

    Add Detail

Use modelling tools, the back of a paintbrush or a toothpick to score lines, press textures and add fine detail. Smooth seams with a damp finger or a soft brush dipped in water.

  4. 4

    Air-dry 24h

Leave the work uncovered on a flat surface at room temperature. Thin pieces cure in 24 hours; thicker pieces need 48–72. Avoid direct sun, fans or air-con vents so the clay dries evenly without cracking.

  5. 5

    Paint

Once fully dry the surface takes acrylic, watercolour, gouache or poster paint cleanly. For terracotta and grey clays, sand lightly with fine sandpaper first to expose a velvet-matte finish.

  6. 6

    Seal

For pieces that will be handled — ring dishes, planters, ornaments — finish with a clear acrylic varnish in matte or gloss. This protects the paint and adds a light water resistance.

Frequently asked questions

JOVI Air Dry Clay · the questions we hear most

Is JOVI Air Dry Clay safe for kids?

Yes. JOVI Air Dry Clay is non-toxic, water-based and certified to EN71 (the European Toy Safety Standard) and bears the CE mark. It is suitable for children aged 3 and up under adult supervision, and is used in primary classrooms across Spain, Europe and Malaysia.

How long does JOVI Air Dry Clay take to dry?

Thin pieces (under 5 mm) cure in about 24 hours at room temperature. Thicker sculptures (15–25 mm) need 48 to 72 hours. Leave the work uncovered on a flat surface, away from direct sunlight and air-conditioner vents, so it dries evenly without cracking.

Can I paint JOVI Air Dry Clay after it dries?

Yes — once the air dry clay is fully cured, you can paint it with acrylic, watercolour, gouache or poster paint. For pieces that will be handled often, finish with a clear acrylic sealer or matte varnish to protect the surface and the paint.

Does JOVI Air Dry Clay crack when it dries?

Hairline cracks usually mean the piece dried too quickly or unevenly. Avoid placing work in front of fans, air-cons or direct sun. For thicker forms, build an inner armature from foil or rolled paper to reduce the mass of clay that has to dry. Small cracks can be smoothed with a damp finger or filled with a thin slip of fresh clay.

How do I store unused JOVI Air Dry Clay?

Keep unused clay tightly sealed in its original bag. For extra protection, wrap it in cling film and place it in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Once opened, JOVI Air Dry Clay keeps for several months if stored properly. If it stiffens slightly, knead in a few drops of water to restore the texture.

Why does JOVI cost more than some other brands?

JOVI is made in Spain to European EN71 / CE toy-safety standards, with consistent fine texture, low shrinkage and low odour. Cheaper imported clays often fail safety testing, dry brittle, crack heavily, or contain detectable solvent smells.

We import directly from Jovi S.A. as the official Malaysian distributor, so what you pay reflects the genuine product, the certificates, and local stock that ships from Shah Alam. Read more: JOVI clay safety — what EN71 / CE actually means.

Do you supply primary schools under KSSR / PSV?

Yes. JM Brands supplies Malaysian primary schools, kindergartens and tadika with bulk JOVI Air Dry Clay for the KSSR Pendidikan Seni Visual (PSV) syllabus. We offer classroom packs, invoiceable trade terms, EN71 / CE safety certificates on request and per-class sampling.

See our PSV / KSSR bahan Tahun 1–6 guide, or request a trade quote.

How long does shipping take in Malaysia?

We ship daily from our Shah Alam warehouse. Peninsular Malaysia orders typically arrive in 2–3 working days via J&T or Ninja Van. East Malaysia (Sabah and Sarawak) takes 4–6 working days. Free delivery on Peninsular orders above RM80. Bulk school orders are quoted with palletised freight separately.
